Kondgan Oh. “North Korea: The Nadir of Freedom” (2007) Foreign Policy Research Institute.

     The author, a research staff member at the Institute for Defense Analyses and the author of North Korea Through the Looking Glass (Brookings, 2000), explains      the surveillance, totalitarianism, and lack of freedom in North Korea. Especially for the surveillance, the author introduces “five-family system” which was ancient      Chinese system of surveillance and has been perfected in North Korea. This system is a real example of one aspect of the surveillance in 1984: family members      like sons and daughters watching and reporting suspicious behavior of family member.
