Theme List / Descriptions:

Brainwashing-

Brainwashing in this book takes place during childhood when recordings of beliefs society wants their people to adhere to are played during the children's sleep over and over, supposedly putting these ideas permanently into their heads. This helps make sure that there is no individuality in the society, everyone believes the same thing, no one has different ideas that could put society in danger.

Cloning-

This theme is basically about the way the society in Brave New World breeds children in bottles based on their DNA and making them all the same and perfect. This makes it easier to manage people, stamps out individuality and ensures that everyone is equal (at least within their class).

Selection of Society- (different groups/classes)

World controllers divided the world into five casts. Alphas and Betas are at the top of society as the scientists, politicians, and other top minds. Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons are at the bottom and represent the world's industrial working class.

Sexuality-

the main point is that "everyone belongs to everyone else" (37), the theme of promiscuity - it is wierd if someone dates only one person like Lenina did at the beginning, the Government controls population and about 2/3 of women are steralized. Sex is encouraged from a young age on and it is a very public and known aspect of life. By doing this the intimacy of sex is stamped out of the act and therefore makes it harder for people to create intimate relationships.

"For a very long period before the time of Our Ford, and even for some generations afterwards, erotic play between children had been regarded as abnormal (there was a roar of laughter); and not only abnormal, actually immoral (no!): and had therefore been rigorously suppressed." (27)

Suppression of Individuality-

Through cloning the society makes everyone perfect and the same. This creates it so that physical individuality it stamped out.

Also, they try and keep people from having individual thoughts by drugging them when they are unhappy, this way they never feel the need for change.

Ford, “My Ford”.

the citizens of the World State use Ford as a Lord, or God. They say: "For Ford's sake" instead of for God's sake.

That portrays that religion was replaced by technology.
